Aosta is an Italian Roman market town about 1 hour away from the chalet, going through the Mt Blanc tunnel (€38 in 2005) and taking the toll road on the other side (very low cost).
The town is quintessentially Italian, a real change from the 'Brit' feel of Chamonix. There appears to be no one central car park, so grab the first parking space you come across and then walk to the centre of town. The town isn't that large.
Check out the Roman sites (excellent free tourist map/guide from the tourist information centre in the centre of town), Italian delis and some excellent restaurants (off the highstreet).
A great place to visit if the weather isn't so good (often the weather in Italy can be bright sunshine when the Chamonix valley is thick cloud!)
